Festivity and lots of people out and about for Norway’s Constitution day. Highly overcast skies but temperature was at a comfortable 20 or so degrees.
So what is the skinny on this 17th of May? It is Norway’s official national day :] So, according to a classmate’s husband, Norway had it’s constitution a century or so before it was given it’s ‘true’ independence. Being handed off from the Danes to the Swedes for an extra 100 or so years of ruling couldn’t have been all that fun for this fish loving, nature walking, rain attracting awesome country. So 17th of May is where all the Norwegians dress up in their fineries or their bunads – traditional rural wear turned proper festive wear, different colours and embellishments dependent on which area of Norway the mother is hailed from … or made up ones – and have a lovely, crowded and fun family and friends day with a good helping of hot dogs and icecream :]
Here’s what I was able to snap amongst the festivities, enjoy!
Wow it’s been a long sunday baking it up in the kitchen!
I first tried this lovely carrot cake at a friend’s place. It was soooo very moist and ridiculously easy to make. Even grating the 10 or so carrots wasn’t so bad when you have friends about. :] I asked for the recipe and have been waiting to create the carrot cake once more. Cue in Sunday baking and inviting E’s family over for after dinner cake and decadent hot chocolate :]
I remember the first time creating these guys was in hospitality class in high school, many years ago. A good ol’ versatile choux pastry in need of major elbow grease. Resulting in delicious puffs and eclairs. I even made it a few years back, they came out too dry, you wouldn’t think it possible to overbake these guys… but i found out it was quite possible XD I also had a love for delicious custard puffs and that’s what I always try to buy whenever I head to an asian bakery back in Sydney.
Today, I have revisited the choux pastry with my partner in crime and nutted out some dainty mini puffs. I’ve been craving some custard puffs… but we only had a finite amount of eggs… cue in 3, enough to make the puffs but not the custard XD I sat cross-legged in front of the oven watching them become golden and yummy. When at last, after a few hurdles, they came out smelling great, we filled the cute little puffs with raspberry jam, drizzled with vanilla sauce and devoured in front of episodes of Arrow. Satisfied little home bakers we are :]
Oh look, sketches!
Had Kimbra’s album on loop whilst happily doodling friday away :] Also, got through the first 4 episodes of The Carrie Diaries when I took a break from listening to the loop. I still wish they didn’t cancel Jane by Design… I really liked that show… and all Jane’s wardrobe! I think I should get another monitor as I had to reduce my photoshop window quite a bit to fit in the media player XD Also… do click for a bigger look at the silly goldfish, it’s a little sharper when it’s at it’s proper unsquished size :]
Now… i’m quite famished! Time to see when some yummy tomato soup and toasty buttered sourdough can be made! Yeh… the kitchen is currently getting measured coz we are having some black floral plates gracing the walls of the kitchen! yay! I’ll leave you with this last pic, I was chatting to my friend earlier today and he asked to draw him a ferret. He said he would like one for a pet and can have them trained for the hood XD So here goes, a girl in a hoodie with a ferret… bit hard to tell what that furry creature is… sitting on her shoulder. Hoope you like it James :]
Enjoy the weekend everyone! Har en fin helgen! 🙂
My face was frozen numb with all my goosebumps standing to attention as I power walked from the bus stop towards the warmth of my classroom. I was pretty covered by my puffy sleeping bag-esque down coat but my fingers! Fingers were pratically popsicles (!!!) from holding onto the water bottle.
I know, I know, I hear you say, girl, you should have just stopped and pulled on some leather gloves but you know what I thought? Hey, I can totally hack this… so I soldiered on. Haha, this is not a tragic story… I didn’t end up losing two fingers from frostbites, I was just cursing under my breath and willing myself to walk even quicker without scraping and ruining the heels of my boots. 🙂
Dum di dum… time to start working on my lekser (homework). See yas!
